Non-Policed Life

Nondescript life
rows and rows of houses spanning the entire city block
red white blue
all with flawless lush green leaves
white picket fences
and a small doghouse off to the side of the yard.

Beyond the city block lay
the one sole house that looked different from all the others
a castle in the Victorian house style
four turrets
elaborately carved frame around the porch
four stories high
pale blue in color.

The one man who lived there
reputed to be a magician
not the stage variety either
had only one sole housemate
some say it is his granddaughter
others say it is a very young wife
who has no family of her own.

As quietly as they lived surrounded by trees
flowering bushes and the biggest garden in the city
nobody ever saw them in town much
yet the unusual couple were happy together
not burdened by the worries other families in the city seemed to have
mortgages children keeping up with Joneses.

Perfectly happy with what they had
each other
no fighting yelling or screaming
a lifestyle well suited to them
with no one to interfere
tell them what to do or how to do it

no policing meant peace and happiness.

Seurat in Spring

{ – libretto singing cat

! --M'appari tut'amor –}

Von Flotow doesn't hear any meows

the light, airy romp through the spring garden
French daintiness
avec biftek et pomme de terre des frites
Post-Impressionism of Seurat hanging above a wall
encased by a heavily gilded frame

a bowl of fruit on the table in front of a majestic
velvet covered chair

her royal Persian furry highness approves
the emerald tiara placed upon her head
which matches her gem encrusted collar.

Poem of the Week

Sandhill Crane Restaurant

Three sandhill cranes walked along the lake
discussing how many bugs each one could find for lunch
until one of them spoke up
and said there was a great Italian restaurant downtown
where they can get something decent
to fill their bellies
in the cold winter weather.

The other two birds nodded their heads
and flew off
chatting loudly enough
to wake the neighbors
arrived on the green
in the center of town,
looking eager for some hot food
which was better than bugs and tastier.

Walking inside the restaurant
the host showed them their seats
where they ordered spaghetti with
pesto sauce not too spicy but just right.

Both the food and service was excellent enough
for the birds to return again
their graceful presence
delighting the customers
and having no qualms about encouraging their
friends to stop by and have lunch with them.

Once the birds finished eating they paid the bill
in golden eggs and left,
knowing the restaurant owner would mistake
the eggs for magical ones
instead of chocolate covered Easter eggs.

Deer in your headlights
dancing to the Bee Gees
no one in the woods sees
not even the trees
hepcat
one of Santa's missing drivers.

Knave black ibis
no self deprecation
of the graceful birds
writing chrysology
upon the ancient
tablet at Rashad
laughing and chatting
render to a silver spun
cypress from days of
Shah Koroush-e Bozorg
enter the presence of fire
sacred fire
the active force of God's eye.

Poetry publication in Children Churches and Daddies

January 2010 marks my sixth appearance in Children Churches and Daddies. My poem for this appearance is titled "Romancing the Babies." The prose quality is what makes this poem work so well. My profuse thanks to Janet Kuypers for always enjoying my work enough to print in her publication. And now, it is time for "Romancing the Babies"!
